Patterns 2 Ways! AGES 3+

We have been working on patterns this week. In this activity, the kids created a pattern with the counting bears. Then they represented their patterns on paper with dot paints. Studies have shown that encouraging a child’s understanding of patterns contributes to the development of various kinds of mathematical thinking, including counting, problem-solving, algebra and drawing inferences about number combinations.

First have your kids try and make a pattern. If they are having a hard time coming up with a pattern on their own, show them an example and talk about how the colors repeat.

After the kids made a pattern with the bears. They used Do a Dot paints to represent their pattern on paper.

When they finished the activity. We talked about their patterns. How many blue? Yellow? Which number is bigger? Which number is smaller?
