Ice Cream in a Bag! AGES 3+

The boys had asked me how ice cream was made. So of course we had to find an ice cream making experiment! There are many versions of ice cream in a bag on pinterest. We went with the food network recipe. We mixed the base and then made 4 different flavors: vanilla, vanilla chocolate chip, chocolate, chocolate chip.

What you need (affiliate links):
Base Ice Cream:
2 cups whole milk (we used half and half)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
10 cups ice
8 tablespoons rock salt (ice cream salt)
Zip loc bags small
Zip loc bags large

Check out Jalen and Kysen making the ice cream in the video below.

We went with the food netwrok recipe. In the process of making the ice cream we had to measure using our math knowledge. We also talked about liquids and solids. How when we mixed the ice cream base it was a liquid and how when it turned to ice cream it would become a solid. Jalen was in awe when he saw that this experiment really worked and the liquid mix had turned into ice cream. Another fun science thing we talked about was what happens when we mix the rock salt with the ice? It made the ice colder! So cold that we put on gloves to shake the bags!Full Details and recipe here: https://learnasyouplay.net/2019/01/27/ice-cream-in-a-bag-ages-3/

First mix the whole milk, sugar and vanilla in the small ziplock bag. You may want to tape the small ziplock bag to make sure it stays closed.   Next put the rock salt in the large ziplock bag.  Then place the small ziplock bag in the large ziplock bag with the rock salt and ice.  Now shake and shake and shake…. until you have ice cream!

This was a fun experiment! The best part was that when we were done we got to eat ice cream! We added sprinkles of course!
