If you are working on sets of 5 you need a dice with numbers 0-5. Cut an egg carton to have 5 slots. Roll the dice and fill the egg carton with pom poms to match the number you roll. Then count how many empty spaces there are. Add the number of pom poms and the number of empty spaces to make 5. Before we start I always have the kids count how many empty spaces their are so they can get an understanding that we are working with sets of 5.
If you are working on sets of 10 you need a dice with numbers 0-9. Cut an egg carton to have 10 slots. Roll the dice and fill the egg carton with pom poms to match the number you roll. Then count how many empty spaces there are. Add the number of pom poms and the number of empty spaces to make 10. Before we start I always have the kids count how many empty spaces their are so they can get an understanding that we are working with sets of 10.
