A DIY abacus! This is a great way to work on sets of 10. Number sense is important because it encourages students to think flexibly and promotes confidence with numbers. A large body of research has shown that number sense develops gradually, over time, as a result of exploration of numbers, visualizing numbers in a variety of contexts, and relating to numbers in different ways.

First cut your pool noodle into pieces. Then cut a slit in each piece. For this activity you need 10 pieces, 5 of one color and 5 of another color.
Next grab a dice and you are ready to play. Kysen would roll the dice. Then he would call out what number he rolled. He rolled a 9, so he moved 9 pool noodles to the right. Then he counted how many were left. He was able to tell me 9 and 1 make 10. Then he rolled again!
He was most excited when he got 5 because it split the noodles right in half. 5 orange on one side and 5 lime green (as Kysen called it) on the other side.
