Race car CVC words! Ages 4+

Kysen has been really into practicing his letter sounds.  Since he loves race cars we did a fun activity where we mixed letter sounds and race cars.   He was practicing sounding out and  blending  CVC  words.  A CVC words is a word that is made up of a consonant, vowel and consonant sound.

Children are taught letter sounds in Reception. This involves thinking about what sound a word starts with, saying the sound out loud and then recognizing how that sound is represented by a letter. The aim is for children to be able to see a letter and then say the sound it represents out loud. This is called decoding. Once children start to learn their letter sounds in reception, then they can start to blend sounds to read words.

Here is a great list of CVC words from the measured mom.

Grab a dry erase marker and write out a CVC word.

Have the child sound out each individual sound as they drive the race car on the track.

Once they get to the last letter.  Have them race to the finish blending the sounds together.

Phonological Awareness

Playing with Sounds in Language

We like to think of phonological awareness in preschool as playing with, recognizing and working with the sounds of language – or the sound system of language. Pre-Reading skills have a significant impact on a child’s ability to read and understand.
